Old-Time Salty Vaudevillian -- The Van Gogh of Americana Music
Thu. Nov. 15 at 7:30pm $10 adv./$10 door seated <21 w/parent
Baby Gramps: Old-Time Salty Vaudevillian: Baby Gramps plays an antique acoustic National steel-bodied resonator guitar, and sings his own unique arrangements of rags, jazz, & blues songs from the 20's & 30's, folksongs, sing-a-longs, and many originals with wordplay, vaudeville antics, hilarious lyrics, animated guitar playing, and throat singing. He has an endless and varied repertoire which he draws upon to complement the ambiance of the show. His extensive repertoire has provided him with opportunities to share shows with blues musicians, traditional folk musicians, and jam bands. Whatever the audience, he keeps them engaged with his energy, humor, and spontaneity. According to Seattle Metropolitan Magazine, Baby Gramps is one of the 50 most influential musicians of the last 100 years. Rogues Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs, and Chanteys, a two-CD set produced by Hal Willner and Johnny Depp, landed him on The Late Show with David Letterman with Tony Garnier, Bob Dylans bass player and band leader, backing him up on bass. In recent years Baby Gramps participated in 7 films including a jug band documentary, a Louie Louie documentary, and an update of the academy award nominated film Streetwise.
Baby Gramps and Tom Noddy have appeared on David Letterman.
Tom Noddy's Bubble Magic has appeared on Johnny Carson, David Letterman, on stage at the Moulin Rouge and at the Paris Opera. Tom became familiar to Santa Cruzans in the 1980s when he was a street performer, a busker, on Pacific Avenue for several years. Then, when Johnny Carson's Tonight Show called and Tom started getting calls from theaters and TV shows all over the world his local appearances became rare. But Tom still lives here and now he is thrilled to join his long-time friend, Baby Gramps.
